If an employer is impressed by your application, you may be asked for an interview. There are different types of interview, the standard interview with HR or employer, plus telephone interviews (which are just as important and some people find more difficult), interviews with a senior member of staff or partner, or panel interviews with several people grilling you. You may even get several kinds of interview with the same company as you progress through the application process. Here are some simple tips on how to appear confident and employable…
ATTIRE. If in doubt wear a smart suit. Gents, have neat and tidy hair, and make sure your clothes are clean and ironed. Ladies, don’t over-do the make-up, have an elaborate hair-do, or wear towering heels.
PLAN. Plan your journey in advance so you know exactly where to go and how to get there.
READ. You should be fluent in the job description, the company and how you fit in.
PUNCTUALITY. Make sure you are on time, arriving 5 to 10 minutes early is preferable.
SMALL TALK. Don’t be afraid of the old clichés about the weather or traffic. Just allow the conversation to flow… and don’t give a one word answer to simple questions.
FIDDLING. Don’t play with your hair, nails, sleeves, jewellery. Use your hands to emphasise points.
SIT CONFIDENTLY. Shoulders back, legs together, chin up, feet pointing straight forward, hands in lap.
SMILE. Sounds easy, but when we are nervous we lose our ability to control even the most simple facial expressions.
Practice these common interview questions:
“Tell me about yourself”
“What appeals to you about the role?”
“Why do you want to work for this company?”
“What is your biggest weakness?”
“What can you bring to the role?”
“What are your goals?”
“Why do you want to work here, and not at our competitor?
“How will your previous experiences help with working at this company?”
