Stephenson Harwood is a full-service international law firm that’s ambitious, growing and delivering groundbreaking deals. For a firm of our size we are very international. We have a huge depth of international experience, clients across the world (some 60% are non-UK) and regularly advise on multi-jurisdictional transactions and disputes, offering clients commercially-focused advice and outstanding service no matter where in the world they operate. Through our international network of offices and affiliates, we provide clients with quality resources and expert local knowledge in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia. Indeed, with some 25% of our people operating out of Hong Kong, Seoul, Shanghai and Singapore, our link to Asia is stronger than ever. Our know-how encompasses corporate, dispute resolution, employment and pensions, environment, finance, real estate, projects and tax. Our clients are hugely varied too. But whether they’re corporates, institutions or individuals, we invest time in getting to know them, forge relationships based on honesty and generate practical solutions that cement loyalty.
Work experience for A-level students
Our Bright Sparks work experience programme is for talented year 12 students. If you’re thinking of a career in Law, Marketing, HR, Finance or IT, this is the perfect place to start. A chance to develop your personal and professional skills, brush up on your CV and interview techniques, get some real-world experience and find where your strengths and interests lie. Our annual winter, spring and summer placement schemes for undergraduates and postgraduates will give you a real taste of life at the firm. We’ll make sure you’re involved in quality work and will try to help you experience any areas of law you’re particularly interested in. Typically you’ll spend one or two weeks in our offices, sitting with qualified lawyers and tackling some case work. You might also visit several City institutions and attend court. You’ll benefit from an organised programme of interactive sessions, talks and social events.
Come along to an open day in January, February, March or April and get a good feel for what a career at a mid-sized international law firm is really like. You’ll meet partners, associates and trainees as well as the graduate recruitment team. We’ll outline what to expect as a trainee and explain the type of work we do. You’ll also take away helpful information about our training contract plus answers to all your questions and the confidence to make the right career decisions.
Our training contract
Two years, four seats and the attention, exposure and opportunity to maximise your learning and development; that’s what we offer the 16 trainees we take on each year. As our training is not only structured and practical but highly personalised, you’ll be able to progress along a path that’s absolutely right for you. Trainees can also apply to gain experience overseas in either our Dubai, Hong Kong, Seoul or Singapore office.
Who should apply?
Firstly we look for a quick intellect. As well as a predicted 2:1 in any discipline plus 320 UCAS points or equivalent, you’ll need strong analytical skills, sound judgement, imagination and meticulous attention to detail. Also vital are the communication skills to be persuasive and build rapport, plenty of drive and determination, plus a keen interest in business.
