Types of work
Corporate advisory (including capital markets, M&A, finance, private equity and venture capital and funds), commercial litigation, data privacy, employment, financial services, internal investigations and compliance, international arbitration, insurance coverage disputes, intellectual property, life sciences, tax, technology and media.
As a trainee you will receive work assignments designed to develop your skills and will get the support and training to excel in your work. In addition, all our lawyers, including trainees, are encouraged to undertake pro bono work.
You will do four six-month seats, rotating between departments. All trainees will undertake a seat in Corporate and a contentious seat in Dispute Resolution. We try to accommodate your interest in specific practice areas whenever possible and currently offer optional seats in the following areas: employment, life sciences transactional, life sciences regulatory, tax & incentives and technology & media, as well as offering client secondments.
The work you undertake will vary by practice areas and we aim to give trainees as much responsibility as they can manage. You will work in small teams directly with associates and partners, and with overseas colleagues.
We aim to distinguish our trainee programme by offering a genuine support network which includes assigning associate buddies and undertaking regular performance reviews. We have an excellent record of retaining trainees on qualification and we aim to recruit and retain trainees who are interested in making a long term commitment to the firm.
Closing date (training contracts starting in September 2017)
Who should apply
Candidates must be able to demonstrate a consistently impressive record of academic achievement. In particular, we look for strong grades at A-level (minimum AAB/360 UCAS points or equivalent) and candidates must be predicted to achieve (or have achieved) at least a 2:1 in their undergraduate degree.
However, whilst being academically strong is important, we look for much more than that. The candidates we choose are sharp, articulate and quick thinking in interview. They have confidence and composure, but also honesty and humour. We ask ourselves: ‘Will I enjoy working with this person, and will they impress our clients?’
Summer Vacation Scheme
Our vacation schemes are a great way for students to get a ‘taster’ of the firm and decide if a career in law is for them. We operate the same candidate selection criteria for the vacation schemes as we do for training contract places, and many trainees have been recruited after spending time with us during the summer.
Each year we offer 24 vacation placements, split into three week-long programmes running in late June and July. Participants sit with a senior lawyer and will get involved in project work, participate in group activities and attend a series of presentations. We also organise a number of social events so you can have some fun and get to know us.
