Herbert Smith Freehills
About Herbert Smith Freehills
We are one of the world’s leading legal practices. Our main clients are prominent global and national businesses that we serve from offices in Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and the US. Many of our lawyers are leaders in their field. We are continuing to expand our global network in such locations as South Korea and Germany. We are also looking to establish a presence in Francophone Africa and Brazil.
We are committed to excellence, providing tailored legal advice of the highest quality to major corporations, governments, financial institutions and all types of commercial organisations. Alongside our outstanding reputation in dispute resolution and corporate work, we have leading practices in finance; real estate; competition, regulation and trade; and employment, pensions and incentives.
We are also recognised as a leader in several industry sectors, including the energy and natural resources and financial institutions sectors. Our award-winning in-house advocacy unit is the first such unit in the UK and offers a complete dispute resolution service and an alternative to the Bar.
The quality of our international network enables us to provide an integrated domestic and cross-border service to our clients. Our working environment is supportive, strongly team oriented, friendly and non-hierarchical. We invest heavily in our people’s development and growth – both personal and professional.
We advise such companies and institutions as BAT, BP, BSkyB, Chevron, Citigroup, Coca-Cola, EDF Energy, Goldman Sachs, HBOS, Morgan Stanley, O2, PricewaterhouseCoopers, RBS, Tata, Time Warner and TUI Travel.
Training Contracts and Vacation Schemes
The training process balances contentious and non-contentious work; early responsibility and support. An emphasis is also placed on professional and personal development, with the firm running a mentoring scheme as well as its own legal development programme. Trainees rotate around four six-month seats, including a seat in a specialist area such as IP, tax, trusts, EU/ competition, employment, pensions and incentives or the advocacy unit. Trainees can also apply to go on secondment to a client or to one of the firm's international offices. Herbert Smith Freehills runs vacation schemes in the winter and summer. Please visit our website for further information on our schemes.
What we look for
As well as a strong academic record, applicants require a strong level of commercial awareness and the common sense to be able to make their own way in a large firm. Combine these qualities with a creative and questioning mind, and Herbert Smith Freehills will offer you great challenges and rewards.
