About

Hill Dickinson is an award-winning, full service international law firm with big clients, great people and fantastic opportunities. With around 1300 people, including 180 partners, we have offices in London, Manchester, Liverpool, and Sheffield in the UK, alongside international bases in Singapore, Piraeus, Monaco and Hong Kong.

Main areas of work

We are a full service firm, so we cover all areas of law and work across a number of sectors, including: insurance, retail, aviation, sport media, health and marine.

What are we looking for?

Intellect: 2:1 or above – brain power is a bare minimum for us. We want trainees who show a commitment to learning and who’ll continue to learn throughout their careers. We’ll check out the grades you got throughout university, your A-level grades, and your post-graduate grades to make sure you’re right for us.

Your personality – it’s safe to say we like people who aren’t afraid to show personality. Just take our current trainees for example – they get up to all sorts outside office hours: Amazonian piranha fishing, kite surfing, glass cutting, fencing and jamming in a jazz band to name a few. And our lawyers give them a run for their money: horse breeding, collecting swords, photography, balloon artistry…we’re a multi-talented firm. So be yourself, it suits you.

Commercial awareness – we know you’ll have seen this phrase everywhere, but what does it actually mean? For us, we want trainees who can demonstrate an understanding of our clients’ demands and expectations of us as their legal advisers. So tell us about your business background, whether that’s three months’ work experience in a blue chip company, or eight years working in public services procurement. Another factor is an interest in current and business affairs – read the legal and business news, follow the BBC on twitter, whatever suits you to keep up to date with the developments we and our clients are facing.

Team players – we operate across our network of offices as one, full-service law firm, so we want to see evidence that you can work well as part of a team.

Your passion for a career in law – we want trainees who have a good idea of what being a lawyer is all about. You’ll need to have first-hand experiences that demonstrate your passion for a career in law and the motivation you’ve got to get there – like work experience or completing a vacation scheme.

Training Contract
Trainees will undertake four seats during their contract, from a choice of over twenty different areas of law depending on their office location. Each trainee is allocated a mentor to offer guidance, advice and support throughout the process. The relatively small trainee intake means that trainees receive a vast amount of responsibility from the get-go.

Vacation Scheme

We offer one week vacation placements at departments in our Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield and London offices. We will get you involved in all aspects of your department’s work, from attending client meetings and taking witness statements in court, through to providing liability and quantum assessments and drafting. You will work alongside partners, qualified lawyers and trainee solicitors to give you a good idea of what it’s like at each end of the spectrum.
