Hill Dickinson is an ambitious, innovative and international law firm. If university isn’t the route for you, our legal apprenticeship programme is a real alternative to starting your career in law.

The programme is designed to help you develop your business skills while completing formal training and studying towards CILex qualifications. It is a two year structured training programme based in our Liverpool office. You will join as a trainee paralegal, before completing your nationally recognised CILex Level 3 Qualification – your first step in becoming a qualified lawyer or legal executive.

Our legal apprentices will be playing a key role in the future of our firm, as we continue to innovate our approach to delivering first-class legal services.

Learn and develop the specialist skills both we and our clients look for and value, while you study towards a professional qualification within a nationally recognised framework.

We will support you all along the way.

What is a legal apprenticeship?

Modern advanced apprenticeships are a mix of practical work and learning, designed to meet employers’ needs at a level equivalent to higher education.

There are a number of elements to each apprenticeship and this is called the framework. Each apprenticeship framework has three main strands:

  • Competence based element
  • Technical element
  • Skills element

The three strands are sometimes accompanied by additional qualifications to give the most relevant skills and knowledge required for the job.

Why choose an apprenticeship?

Choosing an apprenticeship will give you:

  • a route to highly skilled roles;
  • a nationally recognised qualification equivalent to the first stages of advanced education;
  • work experience where you get paid whist at the same time as studying;
  • a strong foundation on which you can build, through higher education and studying towards professionally qualified status; and
  • transferable skills, which help you progress to high-skilled careers in the professions.

Hill Dickinson legal academy

Our apprentices will attend the Hill Dickinson Legal Academy which is designed to complement their technical legal training and professional qualification.

Delivered internally, the academy aims to develop commercial awareness, business and personal skills to ensure our apprentices have the support they need to excel in their careers.

There are two distinct programmes within the legal academy, and trainee paralegals will attend both programmes over their two year apprenticeship:

  • Foundation: Introduction to key skills; technical and behavioural, required for entering and progressing a career within the legal field.
  • Advanced: A greater level of knowledge to enhance competence both technically and behaviourally.

Workshops are delivered on a monthly basis and interim work will be set between modules to allow our apprentices to put their skills into practice. A personal mentor will also be available in-between sessions to talk through work scenarios and help with adjusting to the world of work.
