Jones Day is a truly global law firm – probably the most integrated in the world. Our 2,400 lawyers across 41 locations in major business and finance centres worldwide have vast transactional and contentious experience and are at the forefront of globalisation and the advancement of the rule of law. Our strengths in London reflect those of the Firm: our 200 lawyers (including around 65 partners and 35 trainees) have a sophisticated understanding of risk, drawing on specialist insights from across the globe to guide clients through their toughest challenges.

Principal practice areas: In London’s critical financial centre, our lawyers are perfectly placed to address the most demanding and complex global matters; including cross- border M&A; real estate and finance transactions (including banking, capital markets, investment funds, private equity and structured finance); global disputes; and regulatory matters involving the UK, US and other authorities. Additional specialist areas include business restructuring; competition/antitrust; corporate tax planning; employment and pensions; energy; intellectual property; technology; and projects and infrastructure.

The Firm operates a unique, non-rotational training system designed to provide flexibility and responsibility from the start. Our trainees work across different practice areas simultaneously and are encouraged to assume their own workload. This allows for early responsibility, faster development of potential and the opportunity to compare and contrast different disciplines alongside one another. As our trainees do not move to a different department every six months, they don’t miss the end of deals or trials they have worked on.

Our work placement schemes, operating like mini training contracts, will give you a real insight into life as a trainee at Jones Day. Our placement students tell us our scheme is a truthful insight into, and valuable experience of, what life will be like as a global transactions and disputes lawyer working in the City of London. We offer two-week placement schemes for final year students, graduates and postgraduates of any discipline during the Winter, Spring and Summer holidays. Students in the penultimate year of a qualifying law degree may also apply for our Summer placement scheme.

Essential facts: If you are interested in training at Jones Day, apply for a placement first. We expect to recruit nearly all our trainees from our placement candidates so do not expect to open separately for training contract applications in June/July when most other firms complete their recruitment.

Applications open early, usually on 1 September each year. We recruit on a rolling basis and close when we are full, so don’t wait until the deadline to apply. Final closing deadlines (unless we fill earlier) are: end October (Winter); mid-December (Spring); mid- January (Summer). Before you apply, study our website and consider whether our global law firm and distinctive training system is right for you. It’s not to everyone’s taste, but if you think it could suit you, the opportunities are significant.
