Think technology’s boring? Think again
When someone tells you they work in IT, what’s the first mental image that pops into your head? A man in an oversized gaming t-shirt sitting at a huge PC tinkering with binary code? Twenty years ago maybe, but today the technology industry is thriving, with a wide variety of exciting roles available. Take a look at Google, renowned for its exciting and rewarding work culture; in fact, it was rated the world’s most attractive employer by 200,000 students last year. In a striking parallel, smaller UK-based technology seller Softcat was voted the No.2 UK workplace last year, and the 6th best in Europe.
The fact is, technology is becoming more and more entwined with our everyday lives, and as a result individuals and businesses alike are always in demand for technology. That’s where people like you come in. For every person designing software there’s another selling it, another providing aftercare, and yet another researching and developing the next clever solution. The world of technology never stands still which makes it one of the most exciting industries to work in as it places you right on the crest of the wave of new inventions.
How do I get into the tech sector? Do I need any special qualifications?
Not if you come to work at Softcat! We have two training schemes available: Tech Track and Sales Scheme. Whether you join Softcat straight out of university or college, or from a completely different career, we can teach you everything you need to know in our training course – which we’ll pay you to undertake.
The more advanced roles require certain qualifications, but at Softcat you can undertake on the job training and gain industry-recognised qualifications allowing you to progress and take your first steps up the career ladder. Having staff with the right skills is of utmost importance to us – it makes the difference between poor customer service and unbeatable customer service.
So what kind of roles are available in the technology sector?
The technology industry is huge and there are hundreds of different roles out there. At Softcat our staff can be divided into three main categories: sales, technical and administrative.
Sales jobs
Every business needs good salespeople but not everyone has what it takes to shift products and satisfy customers. We attach more importance to your attitude and personality than your qualifications; in short, if you’ve got the friendly confident ‘Softcat vibe’, we can teach you how to sell.
Technical roles
We’re always on the look out for talented techies to bring their passion and abilities to our team. If you love technology and have a passion for delivering excellent customer service a role in our technical team might be just up your street.
Administration and operation roles
Our administrators and operations staff keeps our business running! If you’re looking for more of a ‘behind the scenes’ position, a role in sales support or administration could be perfect for you.
